Lower Owens
FLOW- 100 cfs. Weather
October has been a lot of fun on the Lowens (Lower Owens). Shorter days combined with a recent cold storm has dropped water temps and got brown trout into spawning mode. The spawn on the Lowens is interesting if one didn’t look closely you might just miss it. Many of these fish will head up the many tributaries that flow into the river and some will use the places available in the river. While we have to really adjust our tactics for the spawn on other rivers, one could go about his day like normal and still get into fish this time of year.
The Tricos are still out, females start hatching around 8;30-9am and the spinners show up about 10;30am and go till just after 11am.
Right about the time the spinners finish we have seen a few sporadic PMD’s hatch as well as a little Baetidae mayfly I have not 100% identified, possibly Caenis?. It looks like a little tan Trico dun.
If that wasn’t all, at about 2pm a really interesting, and large mayfly hatches. I may be wrong because I thought this was an Eastern species but it appears to be a Light Cahill, Stenacron Interpunctatum, in the Heptigeniidae Family. I’m not 100% on that but don’t worry a # 14-16 cream dun or parachute will match it.
The streamer has been working well too!!
