Lower Owens
Flow- 225 cfs. Water Temp 56*F +- Weather
They have been pulsing the river between 175.cfs and 225cfs. most likely LADWP is doing a pre runoff flush of the system before the snow melts. Never the less, conditions have been very good on the Lowens. The water temp is good and there is a ton of insect activity, it is a great time for dry fly fishing. Like usual it kicks off early with a micro midge hatch (#22-24) followed by Trico duns, which are huge (#18)! A few species of caddis and mayfly spinners are also out in the morning followed by PMD duns late morning into the afternoon. The craneflies are still active if you want to try something different.
Nymphing has been excellent, just remember to watch your weight. If you fish on a day the flow is low you can get away with smaller flies but on a day with high flows it will take more weight. You have to get it down! The difference between 1 fish and 10 fish is where the fly is at. Even though most samples have been smaller insects (#16-18) we’ve been doing very well with larger nymphs (#10-14)
The streamer fishing has been fun too! The increased flows have opened up more water to fish, the riffles and tail-outs that were to shallow in winter are now deep enough to swing a streamer through!
