Lower Owens
Flow- 275 cfs. Water Temp 56*F +- Weather
It seems we have skipped spring and went right to summer with a couple weeks of temps in the 90’s*F. This melted off a lot of the snow we got from that last storm and created a runoff scenario in early March. This influx of water has triggered LADWP to start sending water south. Flows have been raised to 275cfs. While not unfishable, the fast current is a challenge and can easily knock you off your feet if not an aggressive wader. Seek out the calm margins along the bank where you can get a slow drift. The shallow tailouts and riffles that were void of fish in the winter will now be holding fish, especially as the water temp goes up.
The insect activity has really picked up were seeing midges and BWO spinners out early to mid morning followed by Hydropsyche, little casemakers and Yellow Sallies. A few Bwo’s are still hatching midday as well and craneflies are out if you want to try something different. We’ve switched from small impressionistic flies to larger attractors to get our flies down and seen in this fast flow.
