Hot Creek
Flow- 59 cfs. Weather
“The Creek” has been a lot of fun! Runoff has the flows up and there is finally more water than weeds, too bad it couldn’t stay like this all year. It is a little easier for beginners and those who lack the accuracy to make drifts now that there is more fishable water. It also made the streamer game a little easier.
Lots of insect activity. Caddis, Tricos, PMD’s and Sallies are out. The Trico hatch is fun but complex, male duns hatch late evening. Then, early in the morning the female duns will hatch, around mid to late morning the mating flights occur and the spinner fall will begin. Trout can be very selective to not only the stage but the sex of the insect as they are different colors. Males are darker, usually black or dark olive. Females are lighter, usually with an olive or tan/white abdomen.
PMD’s are in the swimmer family and are very similar to BWO, you could even think of them as cream/yellow BWO’s. All the same patterns you have confidence in for the BWO hatch will work for PMD’s, just change the color. PMD’s will start to hatch late morning as the Tricos finish but both can be out at the same time. These PMD’s are very small but the color should set them apart from Trico’s. Another tell is PMD’s will rise off the water and tavel more or less in a straight line from point A to point B, Tricos will be seen in groups or clouds dipping, dancing and bobbing around.
There are lots of food options available so keep your eyes open for clues.
